Olivia Hussey, a Golden Globe-winning actress, has passed away on 27 December 2024, at the age of 73.. She is best known for her role as Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Her family announced her death in a moving statement that spoke of her love for art and all things beautiful. Here are some chosen words they said to sum up their life:

On April 17, 1951, Olivia Osuna came into the world in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Olivia Hussey’s family later moved to London, which was when her artistic career really began. She first showed considerable talent as an actress at an early age and so, from a young girl Technique was in her blood. Accordingly, she was accepted into the famous Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. It was there that director Franco Zeffirelli discovered her. He was struck immediately by her talent and beauty. So, at fifteen, she was cast as Juliet. This made her a star and earned her the Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer.

Hussey’s portrayal of Juliet was simply enchanting. The film, a dazzling retelling of Shakespeare’s tragedy, received a warm welcome. It earned her a place in the annals of Hollywood history. Before long she was a household name. She projected the innocence and passion of a love-struck girl with incomparable grace. Her combined acting skills with co-star Leonard Whiting, who played Romeo, added strength to the film.

After her first break, Hussey appeared in many different roles. They demonstrated her versatility as an actress. She played the role of the Virgin Mary in Jesus of Nazareth (1977). The critics lauded her performance as having profound depth and sensitivity. In the genre of horror, recognition came her way when she starred in Black Christmas (1974). She also appeared in Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile (1978). And through various video game characters she demonstrated her adaptability in a volatile industry.

Hussey and Whiting, her co-star in the film Romeo and Juliet, made headlines recently; they sued Paramount Pictures over a controversial nude scene in the movie. Their legal battle brought home their long-held concerns about privacy and exploitation.

Olivia’s personal life was as fascinating as her professional life. She was married three times. The father of her son Alexander was her first husband, Dean Paul Martin. Her second spouse was the Japanese singer Akira Fuse, by whom she bore another child, Maximilian. In 1991 she married American rock vocalist David Glen Eisley and had their daughter India, who became an actress like her mother.

Olivia Hussey was knocked by many health problems and from 2008 onwards battled breast cancer. Despite all of this she had a strong will. Her gallantry was an inspiration to fans and friends.

The family’s statement stands as a record: “Olivia lived a life of passion, love, and devotion to the arts.” Many people were moved by her; but they are gone now.”
